My very first post…

Get Involved - Breast Cancer Awareness

Thank you for being among the first to read my very first post of my very first blog.

This is something that I have been intending to do for some time but felt compelled to get it done this evening.  Why? you ask?  I really don’t know!

I do know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  We hear about it all of the time, particularly in October, about how important it is to do regular checks and screenings.

Just the other day at lunch I was sharing with a co-worker how a few years ago during an exam a lump was found in one of my breasts.  I went through the mammogram and ultrasound and eventually a core biopsy.  Everything turned out to be fine, but it was a very stressful time for me as there is a family history.  Turns out, my co-worker had a similar situation herself.  As did another freind.

We are the lucky ones…

Many are not as lucky and are diagnosed with breast cancer.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) educates women about the importance of early detection for breast cancer.  Since NBCAM’s inception, mammography use has doubled, and breast cancer death rates have declined.  Still, many women do not utilize mammography at regular intervals.  In recognition of the fact that mammography is the best available method of detecting breast changes that may be cancer, long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt, and that breast cancer deaths could decline further if all women age 40 and older received mammograms at regular intervals, I urge all women and their families to get the facts about mammography.
